The deadline to submit your entries for the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops’ very first photography contest is rapidly approaching. Entries are due September 15, 2010.

Nature Conservancy Digital Photo Competition

The Nature Conservancy’s 5th annual photo competition is now open for entries.  35 photos will be selected as honorable mentions and finalists.  Winner will be selected by public vote and featured at The Nature Conservancy website as well as in their 2012 calendar, which reaches over 2 million households.

We can talk endlessly about the importance of conservation but mere words cannot compete with the visual impact of a great photo.  Beautiful photographs of nature encourage people to go out and see for themselves what is truly important to conserve.

Submit photos using the Conservancy’s Flickr photo sharing group.  All photos submitted should include the tag - “PhotoContest-TNC10″.  Deadline for submissions is October 4, 2010.  For full details visit my.nature.org.

San Diego Natural History Museum

The Ordover Gallery at the San Diego Natural History Museum has announced a call for entries for the upcoming Best Of Nature photography show.  The Grand Prize winner will receive $1,000 for their image, First Place $500, Second Place $250, Third Place $150, Six Honorable Mentions $100 each and People’s Choice Award $100.  The show will be on view at the Museum November 13, 2010 - January 30, 2011.

Freedom to Create
Deadline:  August 15, 2010

The US$125,000 Freedom to Create Prize celebrates the power of art to: 1. Promote social justice, 2. Build the foundations for an open society, and 3. Inspire the human spirit.  There are three categories: Main Prize, Youth Prize and Imprisoned Artist Prize.  The Prize encompasses all forms of art in any creative field and is open to any individual or group of any gender, religion or nationality.  Entries may be of a single piece of work or a body of work.  Past applicants can enter again but must submit a different piece of art from a different body of work.

En Foco’s New Works Photography Fellowship Awards

En Foco’s New Works Photography Fellowship Awards is an annual program selecting three or more U.S. based photographers of Latino, African or Asian heritage, and Native Peoples of the Americas and Pacific, through a national call for entries.  New Works helps artists to create or complete an in-depth photographic series exploring themes of their choice, and provides the infrastructure needed for national visibility and a professional exhibition of their new work in the New York area.  Submissions can be in any photo-based style or genre (documentary, autobiographical, landscape, abstract, digital, pinhole, alternative processes, etc.).

Noorderlicht International Photofestival 2010

Noorderlicht invites photographers and curators to submit proposals for the 2010 Photofestival.  This year Noorderlicht is focusing on changes in the contemporary countryside.  Today only a minority of the world’s population still lives in rural areas.  The demands of the modern global economy have created a major divide between rural areas and city life in terms of standards of living.  While conditions tend to deteriorate at the countryside, life in urban areas seems to increase rapidly.  This change has been a gradual process in the Western world, and an explosive one in the non-Western world.  The divide will only get bigger in the years to come.

2010 Camera Club of New York Competition

The Camera Club of New York (CCNY) is pleased to announce an open call for applications for its Annual National Photography Competition.  Photographers and photo-based artists working in any genre are eligible to apply.  Applicants are encouraged to submit a cohesive body of work.  Selected applicants will be featured in an exhibition at the CCNY gallery in the summer of 2010 and also on our website.  The first place selection will receive a $500 cash award.

OSI 2010 Audience Engagement Grant

The OSI Documentary Photography Project invites proposals for photography-based projects that use existing bodies of work to actively engage audiences on human rights and social justice issues.  We are looking for alternative models for presenting and disseminating documentary photography to the public.  Projects must include a partnership between individuals and organizations that combines expertise in documentary photography with experience working on the topic or community the project addresses.  5-8 grants of $5,000 to $30,000 will be awarded.

OSI Documentary Photography Project - Moving Walls 18

The OSI Documentary Photography Project invites photographers to submit a proposal and completed body of work for consideration in the Moving Walls 18 group exhibition (opens spring 2011).  Moving Walls is an exhibition series that features in-depth and nuanced explorations of human rights and social issues.  Thematically linked to the Open Society Institute’s mission, Moving Walls is exhibited at OSI’s offices in New York and Washington, D.C. and includes 7 discrete bodies of work.

The Center for Fine Art Photography “Consumption” Juried Exhibition

Consumption is a multifaceted term.  While it can signify the influence of advertising and marketing on our pervasive consumer culture, the word also speaks to profound human instincts.  To be consumed by something-be it illness, emotions, or beliefs-is to oftentimes confront one’s realities.  What, why, when, and how we consume determines the ramifications of the choices we make.  Additionally, consumption can simply suggest a transformation.  The Center is looking for images that visually depict Consumption and what it means to you.  Juror: Brian Paul Clamp, Director of ClampArt.

LACDA 2010 “Top 40″ International Juried Competition
Deadline: April 19, 2010

Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work.  All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.  Open to all geographical locations.  Forty selected winners receive one print up to 24×36 on museum quality paper to be shown in an international group exhibition in our gallery from May 13-June 5, 2010.  The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists.

Jurors: Reginald Woolery, Artist, Curator, Director: Digital Studio, California Museum of Photography and Rex Bruce Artist, Curator, Director: L.A. Center for Digital Art.  Registration fee is $30US.

2010 Photo Review Photography Competition

The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 26th annual photography competition with a difference.  Instead of only installing an exhibit that would be seen by a limited number of people, The Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries in its 2010 competition issue and on its website.  Thus, the accepted photographs will be seen by thousands of people all across the world and entrants will have a tangible benefit from the competition.  Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia.

2010 Mayor’s Arts Awards

The Mayor’s Arts Awards celebrate the contributions of individuals and organizations that make a difference in our community through arts and culture.  The public nominates recipients for the award, and the Seattle Arts Commission recommends recipients to the mayor for final selection.  The awards, which are non-monetary, are presented each year.

Mayor Mike McGinn will present the 2010 awards, Friday, Sept. 3 at Seattle Center in partnership with Bumbershoot, Seattle’s Music & Arts Festival.

New FotoDocument Grants

FotoDocument, based in Brighton, UK, has issued a call for submissions for their new series of £2,500 grants for documentary photographers.

FotoDocument  has  launched  its  first  photo  documentary  project  with  the Environment  as  the  theme.  We will commission a small group of photographers worldwide to create a coherent and innovative body of documentary photographs on this important issue.

We will be commissioning photographers who have a proven track record in creating dynamic  documentary  photography  and  can  present  an  exciting  project  idea highlighting solutions to the environmental crisis facing the world.

Lange-Taylor Prize
Deadline: January 31, 2010

The year 2010 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor documentary prize, a $20,000 award given annually by the Center for Documentary Studies. First announced a year after the Center’s founding at Duke University, the prize was created to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers in the tradition of the acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. In 1941 Lange and Taylor published An American Exodus, a book that renders human experience eloquently in text and images and remains a seminal work in documentary studies. The Lange-Taylor Prize honors their important collaborative work.

The Lange-Taylor Prize is offered to a writer and a photographer in the early stages of a documentary project. By encouraging such collaborative efforts, the Center for Documentary Studies supports the documentary process in which writers and photographers work together to record the human story.

Earth Through A Lens

“Earth Through a Lens” is a juried photographic competition sponsored by the Sustainability Commission of the City of Palm Springs (CA) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. We will display the photographs of approximately 30 finalists for the month of April, 2010 on world famous Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs.

The images chosen will focus on beauty in the natural environment, the degradation of the environment by human activity, and attempts to reclaim or restore spoiled habitats. In sum, the photographs will highlight the importance of developing a sustainable environment.

The Living River Juried Art Exhibit

In celebration of the McKenzie River Trust’s 20th anniversary, the exhibit celebrates environmental awareness and the beauty and vibrancy of rivers and streams of western Oregon and the important role they play in the life of our communities. The exhibition is being held from April 2 to May 1, 2010 at the Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center, Eugene, Oregon.

Eligibility: This juried exhibition is open to all artists (professional, emerging, and students) who reside in the Northwest. Media/Genre: 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional work in all media will be accepted. Accepted 2-dimensional works must be framed and ready to hang and must not exceed 100 X 100 inches including frame.

Free Copyright Seminar For Artists Dec. 16

The American Society of Media Photographers is hosting a free seminar at Pravda Studios in Seattle on copyright issues, including an interactive copyright registration demonstration.

After the social/networking hour four intellectual property lawyers will speak to the audience in a discussion format.  This format, using plain English, is designed to cut through the legalese and demystify the steps you can take to better protect your work.  These steps are applicable to many artistic disciplines.  Our panel of experts will offer practical advice to protect your creative property, your livelihood, and your time and money.  At the end of the seminar, follow along as our experts project an online demonstration, walking you through the steps to actually file a copyright registration.

The Summer Show Project

FOLEYgallery is now accepting applications for The Summer Show Project 2010.  The Summer Show Project offers the unique chance for artists to work directly with the gallery, creating new work to be curated in a group exhibition.  This new initiative will provide an opportunity for emerging photographers to have their work seen, recognized and reviewed by fellow artists, gallery directors, book editors, as well as curators from museum and corporate collections.

Upon acceptance, you will work on your own and with the guidance of gallery owner Michael Foley to create new work dedicated to a theme that will be suggested by the curatorial panel.  A total of 12 photographers will be selected by the panel to participate.
